Are there any long-term concerns about drinking ionized water?

In Japan and Korea, about 15% or so of the population has been drinking ionized water for over 30 years…some even longer. Many hospitals in both Japan and Korea use water ionizers for both its alkalizing/anti-oxidizing properties for drinking and for its acid properties in healing skin sores.

Innumerable tests have been done on mice, rats, chickens, etc., and in almost every instance there were good results noted and no negative results have ever been able to be replicated. There have been no substantiated incidents of negative long-term effects of people drinking ionized water.

I have personally known people who are cancer-free today primarily because of ionized water. My family and extended family are so much healthier because of ionized water! Over the years I have had hundreds of customers who either have written to me or spoken with me on the phone and told me their stories of how water ionizers have help them and their families so much.

Water ionizers have a bona fide and rightful, life-long place in any family’s healthy home.

As a long-time educator [I was a teacher/principal for over 24 years], I am very interested in educating people [and giving people the straight scoop] about water ionizers. I will not allow myself to sell a product that could do harm or isn’t tested thoroughly enough for safety. I also personally, have been drinking ionized water for over 16 years, along with my family and extended family. I can safely say that I am healthier today, at age 59, than when I started drinking it at age 43! The reason I am selling water ionizers today is because a water ionizer is the one, single, best, health product I have ever purchased. So after retiring from teaching I decided to pursue this passion.

Are there negative reports about ionized water?

There are going to be people who will, no matter what it is that you are advocating, will advocate against it. In every case, when I’ve come across a report I have given it my full attention. One chemist was warning people that ionized water could upset the balance in your colon. It seemed like a silly warning, especially in light of all the colonoscopy work that Dr. Shinya has done to show the great things ionized water does for all of his thousands of patients’ colons [Dr. Shinya is the inventor of the colonoscopy]. But even though the claim seemed silly, I still checked it out on myself.

Just a few months ago my husband and I had comprehensive stool analyses [which showed a perfect supply of good bacteria, zero bad bacteria, zero parasites, and good results in every other way.]

Not only do we feel healthier than ever, but the blood, stool and urine tests my husband and I have done [after drinking ionized water for over 16 years] are showing this as well!

Another health-reporter was worrying people about long-term use [he said short-term use for detoxing was good but not long term...however didn’t specify his reasons]. He hinted at the stomach/colon, and possibly “leaky-gut”, but was elusive [I think he just wanted to sell his newly imported water filters]. So, just last month I had a urinalysis [along with test for leaky-gut] and the comprehensive report showed that all levels for everything tested were perfect. In addition my heart rate and blood pressure were so good the nurse made a comment about how envious she was.

It’s interesting that none of the “authorities” that I’ve run across who have advocated against water ionization have ever actually tried it.

Their reports are obviously flawed in such a way as to show they haven’t much knowledge about water ionizers either. Many health authorities or scientists who HAVE fully checked out water ionizers have concurred with what I know from experience, that the health benefits possible are quite bona fide and even amazing. How do vitamins fit in with water ionizers?

Another benefit: Since I’ve been drinking ionized water, my intake of vitamins and minerals have lowered. I take a normal amount of vitamins today, but took a greater than normal amount 20 years ago…because I wasn’t as healthy then as I am today. Last year my husband and I had our blood fully analyzed and, just as we knew it would, every level of dozens of things the test covered was perfect.

Medical Uses for Water Ionizers:

There is one particular water ionizer that claims to be the only one suitable for medical uses [such as if a person has cancer or some other condition they are worried about]. This is bogus and absolutely, completely, 100% untrue. The actual fact of the matter is that it is a sales pitch and it is in my opinion bordering on fraud.

Water ionizers, in general, have been approved for manufacturing in 1965 by the Japanese Ministry of Health and Welfare as medical equipment to produce medical substances.

In Japan, Korea, and Taiwan, water ionizers are considered as medical devices, but also as water treatment devices. In the U.S., water ionizers are not considered medical devices, and it could be risky for a company to market them as such. Enagic gets away with their marketing, because mostly these claims are being made person to person or in closed group settings. However it is a risky thing to do, and could put the company out of business or at least cause some damage in the way of fines. Several years ago, when I started hearing the claims by Enagic dealers, I decided to find out for myself. I was perfectly willing to switch companies if the Enagic was better. I just wanted to know. I cannot tell you how many times I have tested and retested [and retested and retested] their water ionizer against the other two top water ionizers, the Athena and Tyent water ionizers, as well as other water ionizers, and other than an occasional higher pH [for cleaning water…too high to drink] and a higher flow-rate [which in my opinion is not a good thing…because the filtration suffers when the flow-rate is too fast] the Athena is better. The Tyent is probably tied…but the warranty is better with the Tyent and so is the price.

For long-term use, when is it best to consume ionized water?

It is best to consume ionized water away from mealtimes if your meal contains meat. Some also suggest to not drink it while taking medications [vitamins are fine though]. A good rule of thumb is for 20 min. before and 20 min. after meals or taking medications, drink little or no alkaline water. If you like to drink water with meals containing meat, then I suggest you squeeze a slice of lemon into your ionized water and you’ll change the pH of it to acidic or just drink filtered water. The reason for this is that during the initial phases of digestion your stomach needs to maintain a more acidic environment [in particular if your meal contains meat].

How do You Know You’re Getting the Best Quality of Water Ionizer?

One way is to compare the water ionizer’s ORP per Unit of PH: Not all ionizers will give a good ORP at lower pH levels, such as at pH settings of 8 or 8.5. That’s why I’ve done extensive testing of both the pH and ORP of all of the leading water ionizers. I have also tested ionizers in a variety of different locations, so I could get an idea of how source water affects the ORP at the various pH levels.

Why Would People Need the Lower PH Settings of 8 or 8.5?

People whose diets are mostly fruits and vegetables are probably more naturally alkaline and may need to set their ionizers to give them pH levels of about 8 or 8.5. Also, depending on the pH level of your incoming water, some water comes in at already a 8 – 9 pH. In this case, the ionizing of water is still very beneficial, because ORP [oxidation reduction potential, or antioxidant value of the water] delivers over 50% of the health benefits from water ionization.

People whose diets are fairly typical of US, with several trips to a fast food restaurant per week and/or more than 40% of food intake [visually] is from meat and grains will probably be more acidic and need higher pH settings for their ionized water, such as a pH of 9 or 10.

Which are the Best Water Ionizers?

It probably depends a little on your source water [where you live], but I’ll give you a very brief summary of what I’ve found to be the best water ionizers.

Medium-Hardness Water Areas: The best ionizer I’ve found for giving high ORP per unit of pH in medium-hardness water areas is the Athena water Ionizer [and also its under-sink equivalent, the Delphi]. The Tyent is also good, as well as the Enagic, Miracle Max or VS70, in that order, although these perform better at the higher [too high to drink] pH settings and do not get as good ORP per unit of pH in the lower pH settings. The Enagic is not good at getting lower PH levels when the source water is too alkaline to begin with. You can do it, by increasing the flow-rate and reducing the power-setting, but then the ORP is not good.

Soft Water Areas: The ionizer needs to work harder in soft water areas to bring the pH level up. Some water ionizers are more suited to this. The best ionizer I’ve found for giving high pH and ORP in extreme soft water areas [such as BC, Canada, or Washington state] is the Chanson Miracle Max or VS 70 water ionizers. The Athena or Delphi water ionizers are good if you set the pH-Boosting setting up to the highest level, and add a mineral filter to one of the filter ports. In this case you will get fantastic ORP per unit of pH in soft water areas, better than the Miracle Max, however you may not be able to get much higher than an alkaline value of 9.5 or 10 pH or much lower than an acidic potential of 4 or 5 pH [for cleaning purposes]. The Tyent and Enagic water ionizers are great too, probably equal to the Athena for drinking pH-levels, if you add a Remineralizer. In all cases, if you have extremely soft water [either because you have reverse osmosis or if you live in an extreme soft-water area, I recommend using a Remineralizer for the best results. With the addition of a Remineralizer or two, you can boost your incoming hardness to any desired amount.

Very Hard Water Areas: In very hard water areas, such as Arizona or Vegas, or in the case of very hard well-water, it is difficult to use any water ionizer to its full potential unless you do something to fix your source water first. For instance, you may be able to get decent drinking water, but may not be able to get any acid water lower than a pH of 5 or 6. The best results would come from reducing your source water to medium-hardness levels before ionizing it. I have had very good reports from people who have used the Reverse-Osmosis-Remineralizer-System to treat their water prior to ionization. The only down-side to this is the amount of water you are likely to be able to use at any given moment is about 1 ½ gallons. After that, you will need to wait about a half hour before you can pour more. The second-best fix for water that is extremely hard is the Spartan Ionizer Shield. I have several very good reports from happy customers about this product. The Spartan Ionizer Shield pre-filtration system doesn’t reduce your water flow or quantity, and it cuts the hardness in about half. If you use a whole-house softener [which uses sodium or potassium] the Spartan Ionizer Shield wouldn’t be the right product, though. The only effective filtration for sodium or potasium is reverse osmosis.

After over 16 years of drinking alkaline ionized water, I can say with conviction that the very best thing I could give to myself or a loved one is a WATER IONIZER! Give yourself and your family the gift of health this year!

Which Water Ionizer is Best?

That’s a hard question to answer, because it’s kind of like buying a car. But, just like with cars, there are certain companies who have been making water ionizers longer, who are more trustworthy, more reliable and who have scientists and engineers on their design team who truly understand the process and issues connected with making water ionizers. There are also certain whole countries who are better to buy from [i.e., Japan and Korea] because they make water ionizer production fall under strict guidelines. Finally there are certain models which perform better than others. Uses for Ionized Water:

• Drinking: As a Natural Antioxidant it has helped people’s cells and blood vessels [possible prevention of cell mutations, heart disease, vein/artery issues and blood pressure issues]. As a body alkalizer it has helped prevent cancer and even reverse allergies, colds, acid reflux, and a large list of issues related to acidic bodies.   • With Medication: Use only filtered [purified] water setting for 20 min. before and after taking medications. Otherwise medications may become too quickly and thoroughly absorbed into the body.
  • With Vitamins: Used ionized water as usual.
  • With Meals: Try it. Many people love to drink ionized water with their meals and have no problem doing so. I’ve heard it could possibly make the stomach too alkaline and interfere with digestion, but this hasn’t been the case with my family.
  • With Coffee or Tea: It makes a great tasting coffee or tea, however you should know that heating ionized water will lose a lot of the pH and ORP benefits.
  • Mixing into Cool Aid, Crystal Lite, etc.: This is fine to do, however you should know that mixing ionized water with these mixes will lose a lot of the pH and ORP benefits.
• Cooking: Ionized water is great to cook with, but you should know that heating up alkaline ionized water loses a lot of its alkalinity and ORP benefits.  Therefore try not to
• Storing: The best container to use with ionized water is a glass [or hard plastic] smaller [1 quart or less] bottle with a lid that has a rubber seal in it. Fill the bottle to the brim [no air space will help to retain the ORP of the ionized water better]. • Babies: Babies should drink filtered water [select the "purified" setting rather than an alkaline setting until the baby is about 2 years old...or unless the baby appears to have allergies.
• Children: 2-4 year-olds should be given alkaline ionized water at level 1 or 2 [8.0 - 8.5 pH].
• Pets: Pets like alkaline water just like people do. Use lower levels for baby animals just as you do children.
• Plants: Plants like acidic water. Collect the acid water from the bottom hose in fill bottles to use for watering your plants.
• Stain Remover: Use the highest alkaline your ionizer can produce [10.5 pH or higher] to dab on stain or dip stained spot into. It will loosen up the stains of chocolate, gravy, soda, coffee, blood and other hard-to-clean substances. After a minute, rub lightly and watch stain disappear. [works on fresh stains, so do this before you launder your stained clothing].
• Grease Cutter/Degreaser: Use the highest alkaline your ionizer can produce [10.5 pH or higher] to clean around stoves or clean grease off dishes & pans and as a pre-wash for fine washables or other laundry.
• Germicidal: Acid water at a pH of 4 or below should be sprayed on surfaces where you wish to kill germs [i.e., toilets, sinks, counters, tables]

Shopping Water Ionizers? Watch out for Deceptive Tactics.

If a company makes wild claims about how far-out better their water ionizer is than EVERY other water ionizer…beware. Many years and years of research have gone into the engineering of water ionizers. I would not completely believe that one company beats out ALL others, unless I tested their water ionizer against other exceptional water ionizers myself.

I used to believe these kinds of claims [at least partially believe them] until I started extensively testing water ionizers. Since then I’ve found out in every case where a water ionizer company has stated wild superiority, it was simply not true. Maybe it was an exceptional ionizer, but there were also other exceptional ionizers. Within the category of exceptional water ionizers, there are a few that are a little better than other exceptional ones in some aspects…but not in all aspects.

Is “a little bit better” worth it? I personally feel it’s worth spending an extra $500.00 or so for a little bit better ORP per unit of pH or for a continuous electrode cleaning system, however, I wouldn’t spend too much extra just to get a little bit better acid water. Each person has to decide for themselves on what’s worth it or not. It’s kind of like if you were buying a car and the salesperson claimed this car could go faster than any other car. That statement wouldn’t mean much to most people, but someone would want to pay extra for that if it were true. I don’t feel that “a little bit better ORP” or “a little bit lower acid pH” warrants wild statements of superiority though. I’ve tested all of the good water ionizers, and I haven’t found one that was wildly better than the rest. 

Are there bad water ionizers? Yes, some are just junk after a couple of years or even right away. If they aren’t using pure titanium coated with pure platinum, or worse, if they’re using titanium-platinum alloys they are selling an inferior product for three reasons:  

1. The levels of electrolysis with alloys will not be able to ionize the water well. Pure platinum is required for full water ionization. Platinum is the best known catalyst for ionization known to man.
2. Alloys will not hold up as well as titanium and platinum in their pure forms, therefore no matter what they say, their water ionizer will not last. It won’t continue getting good ionization.
3. Alloys may contain nickel, copper, or other minerals that can leach into your drinking water eventually. This could bring the levels of those minerals up too high, so as to make your water unhealthy. 

Water Ionizer Warranties: If it’s a new company I wouldn’t trust their warranty, especially if it was one of those “too good to be true” warranties. The test of a good warranty is not only what the company says, but look at some other things, then add up the facts before making your decision based on water ionizer warranty. I suggest to ask yourself these questions:

1. What would happen if everyone started cashing in on that unbelievable warranty down the road? Would the company go out of business?
2. How old is the company?
3. What is, their BBB rating?
4. Does the company seem forthright? Do they supply you with sufficient information about themselves so you could find them if they jumped ship? If they don’t divulge their name, address and such on their websites, they could operate multiple companies that never get linked to each other. Therefore it’s no big deal if one company fails, their other companies will pick up the slack. It’s a little shifty to not divulge these kinds of normal things.

Are there false water ionizer comparisons? Yes. It is definitely not conclusive if a company tells you how they’ve tested all of them and theirs is the best. Where is the proof? I try to keep abreast of all the water ionizer comparisons being done [both the reliable ones and the obviously biased ones] and I’ll share a few things I’ve observed from some of the more shady water ionizer comparisons I’ve seen:.

• Most obviously unreliable: When a company tells you they have compared their brand with other brands, but offers no proof of their claim to be the best, or their proof has holes in it.
• A little less obvious: When a company claims to have had an independent lab analyze their water samples vs. several other popular water ionizer samples, but they don’t have proof that the samples were collected and submitted properly. This is particularly questionable if their test numbers fall out of the range of possibility. For example: I saw a supposed lab test result the other day that showed that the ionizer [all by itself] removed over 90% of the sodium from the water. This is ludicrous, because only reverse osmosis or nano-filtration can do that. It was particularly interesting in that instance that the company collected their own samples to send to the lab.
• Even less obvious: When a doctor or health professional claims that they have compared all of the water ionizers and theirs is the best. This is less obvious, because people tend to believe doctors and health professionals, and they’re used to taking their word for things. This category includes: when a doctor or health professional tells you how bad all of the “other” water ionizers are, but they supply questionable proof or no proof [just anecdotal references to their past experiences years ago]. They of course don’t mention specific names either, because that then would possibly open them up to a law suite if they couldn’t prove what they were saying was true [and therefore it probably isn’t true].
• Most un-obvious: Water ionizer review sites may not be anything more than a front for one of the companies they are reviewing. If the reviewer tells you nothing about himself, nothing about his interest in the business, and nothing about his company, yet pays money to advertise his website….beware. There is something fishy there. I’m pretty sure he’s not just being a philanthropist. Also, if the reviewer sells only one brand, that makes their reviews questionable as well. 

Are there other false claims to watch out for? Yes.

• Here’s a good one: Company claims to be the only US manufacturer, then a year later divulges that their plant happens to be in Korea. When it comes to the purpose of water ionizers to be for improving one’s health, it makes no sense to buy from a company that hides or potentially skews their facts.
• Water ionizer companies who make deals with stars to sell their water ionizers: Does that mean their water ionizer is better? No. These endorsements don’t offer any proof that their ionizer is better. They only offer proof that they made a deal with that star. Using stars to sell a product is just another sales gimmick. It happens all the time with many products.
• Here’s another example: Company says they’re the first and only company that offers a lifetime warranty. This is just silly, because these things can be dated and proven otherwise. [In this case they were the third company to offer a lifetime warranty, and of course that means they aren’t the only ones either.] Always look for the proof of these kinds of claims…or better yet, just ignore them. This is just hot air coming out of a shallow hole.
• If a company tells you all of their certifications, without offering at least links to the PDF documents that prove that, it could be that there is something they are hiding. Otherwise why wouldn’t they show you the documents? Maybe they don’t want you to know the identity of their actual manufacturer, in which case they are probably hiding something.  
• If a company has an “About us” page that tells all about their goals for you the customer, but nothing about themselves or their own background or history, they are probably hiding something about their own identity.
• Or if they have a “Contact Us” page and they don’t even give you an email address, address or phone number, that’s a red flag that they could be hiding something. They should be able to provide you with names, addresses, phone numbers, etc., which tell real information about them.
• Beware of “camera-shy” companies. If you don’t see their ionizers in broad numbers of video-comparisons, and you only see them tooting their own horn, or on only a couple of carefully selected sites, or if they seem to try to stay out of the internet arena [where they would be subject to scrutiny or actual real comparisons]  it could be intentional. Their product might not be that wonderful, and they may not want you to see that.  
• Do not buy a water ionizer from a foreign country [including Canada]. You have no real idea where that water ionizer came from, whose tampered with it. They will show you a picture of the product and it looks right, but you don’t know anything more than that.

A water ionizer will filter your tap water, electrolyze [ionize] it and bring it back to its natural, pristene, pure hexagonal nature. A water ionizer is cheaper, but you have to be smart and do some math to realize it. It will [for pennies a day] provide you with alkaline buffers to help detoxify your body and cells. A water ionizer will provide you [for no extra cost] more antioxidants than you need to be healthy and free of free-radical damage. A water ionizer will last a lifetime [and is often warranted for life].

Bottled water, on the other hand, is cheap only when you’re thinking in the short term. Rather than pennies a day, it’s more like dollars a gallon. Plus, the quality is poor. There is no bottled water that has a high quality, not even Fiji water at dollars a quart-sized bottle!

I’ve just recently added a Glossary of Water Ionizer Terms to my website and in this blog post I’ve included the main terms in tutorial sequence for people who want to know what these terms mean. For a full listing, including all links & further explanations, click here: Glossary .

Ion: A charged particle.

Water Ionizer: An electrical device that first filters the water, then reduces the water-cluster size, splits the water into two streams [alkaline and acidic] by electrically activating [charging] the ions in the water. 

Alkaline Ionized Water: Water which has undergone ionization and which has the properties of smaller cluster size, greater alkalinity, and increased ORP [oxidation reduction potential]

ORP:Oxidation reduction potential. A negative ORP can be explained as having the properties of an antioxidant. ORP is measured in mille volts [mv] as positive [+] or negative [-]. Negative ORP is desired for its anti-oxidizing benefits. Positive ORP [as found in tap and bottled water] causes oxidation.

Free Radical: An oxygen [O2] molecule with a missing electron. Causes oxidation, which is a deterioration of the surface of a cell.

Antioxidant: The ability of a substance to prevent or fight against the free radical damage caused by oxidation. If a substance has extra electrons that can be donated to the O2 molecules which are missing electrons, then it is said to be an antioxidant.

Functional Water: Water which has been enhanced in its ability to hydrate and cleanse [get acids out of] your cells, so as to enhance the process of oxygen getting to your cells and bring about better functions within your cells.

PH: Potential Hydrogen. This signifies the proportion of OH- verses H+ that is present in a solution. OH- [alkaline] is free to take on an H+ [acid] to bring about a neutral within a solution. This process is called “Buffering”. PH is measured on a scale of 0 to 14, in which 0 is a theoretical lowest acidity and 14 is the highest alkalinity. PH of 7 is called neutral. Each progression up the scale signifies ten times the level before it. [Ex. A solution with a pH of 8 is ten times more alkaline (contains ten times more OH- ions) than a solution of pH of 7.]

Buffering: The process of an acidic solution becoming more neutral by adding alkalinity or the process of an alkaline solution becoming more neutral by adding more acidity.

Body Fluid Buffering: Body fluids must maintain an exact pH level [7.365]. If it alters even one little bit you could die. Therefore the body is in a constant state of buffering its body fluids. Usually the foods consumed [especially junk food], the life stresses, smoke, pollution, chemicals, lack of exercise and even exercise will add acidity to the body fluids, which then must instantly be counteracted [buffered] by alkaline minerals. The body has a variety of storage places for these alkaline minerals [joints and bones are the most abundant places], so the body will rob alkaline minerals from these locations to buffer the incoming acids. The body is unable to rob enough alkaline minerals, fast enough, so has other methods of getting the acids out of the blood. • Solidify the acid [transform it into uric acid crystals or some other solid] • Store it in a fat cell [fat cells contain acids, fatty acids, and can be a very effective way of removing acids from your blood quickly] • Trap acids in your cells [Cells give off acid wastes naturally, by transporting them out of the cell and into the blood, however if the blood cannot buffer these acids readily then the acids can’t be released and get trapped in the cells. This brings on a diseased condition of the cell, but is preferable to the instant death that would occur if the acids went into the bloodstream and had no buffers to neutralize them.] • Increased levels of HCL in your stomach. One way to get rid of acid in the blood is to pull it into the stomach to increase the acidity of the stomach. We need acidity in the stomach to digest food, however too much acidity can cause heart-burn, acid reflux, ulcers and other problems. Our bodies need balance, and so we need buffers.

Dehydration: The condition of not having sufficient water in your diet to keep your cells healthy. Many conditions can be attributed to dehydration, such as: headache, low energy levels, low back pain, digestive problems, constipation, obesity, asthma allergies, arthritis, Type II Diabetes, and hypertension.

Micro-clusters: By the time you get water from your tap it comes to you in large clusters of H20 molecules [11-16]. After ionization, the water comes out in smaller clusters of molecules [5-8]. Micro-clustering reduces the surface tension of water and makes it easier to absorb into your cells.

Uses of Acidic Water: Cleaning and disinfecting, astringent, mouthwash, hemorrhoids, foot baths.

Uses of Alkaline Water:Drinking [up to 9.5 or 10 pH], cleaning/degreasing [over 10 pH].

Silver Impregnated Carbon Filter: A carbon filter which is protected against bacterial growth inside the filter by way of the presence of silver, which inhibits bacterial growth.

KDF Filter Media:KDF stands for Kinetic Degradation Fluxion. This is a sophisticated [and expensive] filter media which will remove chlorine, chloramines, lead, copper, mercury, iron, hydrogen sulfide and will reduce bacteria, lime, scale, fungus, and algae. It operates by chemically bonding to contaminants and either changing them to harmless molecules or causing them to become trapped in the filter [and removed from the water supply].

Activated Alumina Filter Media: Removes chemicals [such as fluoride and arsenic] by chemically bonding them to the filter media itself and thus trapping them in the filter and not allowing that chemical to pass through.

Granulated Active Carbon [GAC] Filter:This is filter media that’s good for removing chlorine, chloramine, pestacides, organic compounds and other chemicals. Because it’s so porous, it can adsorb a large amount of contaminants.

Reverse Osmosis: A water filtering system that utilizes a membrane which allows only the solvent [water] to pass through but not the dissolved particles.

Hard Water:Water that has high levels of calcium and magnesium. Water hardness is measured in ppm [parts per million] or gpg [grains per gallon]. Water is considered soft or hard according to the ppm or gpg of calcium and magnesium in the water. Most references report the following:

• Soft: Below 17 ppm [or 0-1 gpg] 
• Medium: 17.1 – 60 ppm [or 1 - 3 gpg] 
• Medium Hard: 61 – 120 ppm [or 3 - 7 gpg] 
• Hard: 121 – 200 ppm [or 7 – 11 gpg] 
• Very Hard: Over 200 ppm [or over 11 gpg

Do Water Ionizers Create Hexagonal Water?

People often ask me if all water ionizers create hexagonal water. There are many ways to produce hexagonal water, and ionized water is one of them. I am going to guess that all of the water ionizers I sell do produce hexagonal water. To my knowledge they haven’t all been specifically tested [only the Jupiter model has - the founding researcher who discovered hexagonal water, Dr. Emoto, has tested the Jupiter Orion and found it to produce a perfect hexagonal crystal], but I see no reason why all water ionizers wouldn’t produce beautiful hexagonal water. The following picture shows the ionized water crystal Dr. Emoto found.

How Is Ionized Water and Hexagonal Water Related?

Hexagonal Water:

Water that contains a healthy balance of minerals and which is not polluted or contaminated with toxins tends to form a hexagonal shaped crystal when frozen. Scientist, Dr. Emoto, discovered the relationship between water that forms hexagonal shaped crystals and water which is healthy, natural and unpolluted [as found high up in a mountain spring]. Dr. Emoto found that water from the tap as well as bottled waters, distilled water and other water either polluted or devoid of minerals didn’t produce beautiful crystals, but instead produced ugly, disorganized forms when frozen.

Dr. Emoto also discovered that speaking to the water or even thinking thoughts at the water changed the outcome of the ice crystles formed by the water when frozen. Most of Dr. Emoto’s videos have been removed from the internet, and they’re now being sold in a set. But here is an interview with Dr. Emoto which summarizes after years of looking at water what Dr. Emoto has to share with us about water. Hopefully this video won’t be removed as the others were:

Ionized Water:

Ionized water is not a synonym for the term hexagonal water, but it is proven to form beautiful crystals and so is hexagonal in nature. But it’s more than that. A water ionizer splits the water clusters and so the water molecules are found in clusters of about 6 instead of cluster sizes of 13 water molecules or so. This may be one of the reasons it shows up as hexagonal water. The pH of the alkaline water produced by a water ionizer is high enough to where when you drink it you can provide your body with the alkaline buffers it needs to reverse the acidic-disease-cycles it has been trying to fight off for years. The ORP of ionized water is highly negative, which provides your body with an excess of antioxidants to ward off cardio-vascular disease, cancers, and other diseases caused by oxidation. The pH and ORP of ionized water cannot be produced in any other way than through water ionization. Water Ionizer owners look at this!

This Water Ionizer easy-to-do trick is something that you can use if you live in a hard water area…to keep your water ionizer squeaky clean. Or even if you don’t live in a hard water area, but your water ionizer seems to need periodic cleanings. This trick can help you not need those cleanings so often [or ever!] No matter what brand of water ionizer you use, even the best self-cleaning brand [such as the Athena Water Ionizers], may have problems [of your water ionizer clogging up with scale] in hard water areas. This trick can save you time and money…and help you understand the workings of your water ionizer better. Here’s the video:

The Water Ionizer trick shown in the above video could save you time and money…and all without wasting any of your great, filtered, ionized water. Here’s a re-cap of the steps shown in the video [just in case you're unable to see the video for some reason.]:

• About once a day do this:
  • Reverse the polls [by choosing an acid setting] of your water ionizer to get your alkaline [drinking level] water from the bottom hose. [the first time you do this use the pH drops to ensure you're getting the right drinking level of water from the bottom hose.
  • Collect your acid water [if desired] from the top spout at the same time.
• Doing this once a day will give your water ionizer extra cleaning without wasting the filtered ionized water or wasting any of your time.
• If you live in a really hard water area, you may see that doing this twice a day is needed.
• If you use your water ionizer a LOT, you may want to do this more than once a day.

ORP stands for oxidation reduction potential. A water ionizer produces drinking water that is both good for you pH-wise [alkaline] and is good for you oxidation-wize [antioxidizes]. Many scientists in the field of water ionization are now saying [although both are very important] that…

the ORP of the ionized water is even more important in preventing diseases than the pH!

PH: People are very sensitive to pH and blood plasma, for instance, cannot exceed a very narrow range of 7.2 – 7.4 [healthiest at 7.365]. This is why balancing your body pH is so important! Your body will shut down digestion, alter temperature, and rob your bones of calcium to make sure the blood stays in this narrow range. Of course it does this, because the alternative is death. Anything that has the ability to bind with acids and neutralize them is called an alkaline buffer. You help your body tremendously by providing plenty of alkaline buffers [i.e. alkaline ionized water]!

ORP: All liquids have an Oxidation Reduction Potential [ORP]. This is the potential of that liquid to reduce/stop/slow-down oxidation. Oxidation can be seen when you cut an apple in half and leave it open to the air. The oxygen in the air reacts with the apple and oxidizes it [removes a negatively charged electron from it], turning it brown. If you set that apple into a solution with a negative ORP [in other words, a solution with a high antioxidant potential], it wouldn’t turn brown. Put some lemon juice on a cut apple. Lemon juice is full of antioxidants. See how it can stay white for days! Oxidation happening in your body [also can be called "free radical damage"] can be slowed down by adding lots of antioxidants. Only a negative ORP can reduce oxidation. ORP can be measured. Most water [tap & bottled alike] is measured at a positive ORP [+150 to +400]. A water ionizer will take that water, ionize it, and in the process add so many negatively charged electrons that it reduces the ORP to the negative range of -150 to -700 or so [depending on the level of your ionized water]. In other words it makes it contain a fantastic number of natural, easily absorbable antioxidants. Any liquid containing a negative ORP greater than -300 is considered a beneficial substance for your health. You can expect to have better resistance to infection, increased strength and energy, and be younger looking if you drink alkaline ionized water with a -300 or stronger ORP. The ORP of a liquid can be measured with an ORP meter.

Should every water ionizer owner get their own ORP meter?

Heck no! They are expensive and hard to maintain. The pH drops that come with your water ionizer are actually a much more reliable tool to use in measuring if your water ionizer is still ionizing well. Once your water ionizer has been designed and engineered, the ratio of pH to ORP ratio is pretty well set. The stronger the ORP of your ionized water per unit of pH, the healthier that ionized water is for your body. It is a test of the design and quality of the water ionizer to get a stronger [more negative] ORP per unit of pH. If your water ionizer has been tested for ORP levels, and it’s good at first, will probably remain good as long as your electrodes stay clean. You can test for electrode cleanliness by testing your pH at certain levels [i.e. lowest acid, highest alkaline, and level 3 drinking level].  You don’t need to constantly check your water ionizer’s ORP. You can do these pH tests every month [for instance] and record your results. If you start noticing the pH falling over time, then you can also safely assume your ORP is also falling, and it’s time to clean your water ionizer [&/or get an EOS device].

The reason I use both pH and ORP meters is in comparing water ionizers with each other. I do a LOT of comparing water ionizers! If one water ionizer at pH 9.5 gives an ORP of -400 and another at pH 9.5 gives an ORP of -350, then the second one is not as good as the first. I also compare the quality of water storage containers. If after several hours or a day the ORP has dropped more than the pH using one container vs another I will know that container is worse for storing ionized water. I do a lot of testing to see how long ionized water can be stored and still maintain the pH and ORP benefits. One thing I’ve learned from my many tests is that ORP drops more quickly than the pH toward neutral. [Note on water storage: Both pH and ORP drop toward neutral constantly, so for maximum benefits try not to store your ionized water for more hours than you need to. Eight hours is fine, but after 2-3 days your ionized water has dropped pretty close to neutral.]

If you want your own ORP meter, you should know how to clean and maintain it!

For anyone who wishes to have and use their own ORP meter you must know some general principles of how to clean and maintain an ORP meter! Without this understanding, your very expensive ORP meter will be worth exactly $0.00 to you in about a month [or less] after purchasing it. In the following video, we’ll take a look at a couple of ORP meters, and some of the ways that you can clean an ORP meter. Here are some of the ways mentioned in the video:

• Keep the probe from drying out
• Keep the probe in a very low pH [acidic] solution in between uses
• Most ORP meters have a cap that comes with the probe and you can fill the cap with the low acid solution before placing the probe into the cap. Store it in such a way that your liquid doesn’t drain out.
• If your probe dries out between testing, get ready for some heavy-duty cleaning [watch video for this]
• Use a dedicated toothbrush for light scrubbing of the probe
• Use a very, very fine sand paper [such as 220 grit] to get the scale off the probe. Do this only as needed and very lightly.
• Be ready to continue to store your probe in the low acid solution for days [then do repeat cleaning] as shown on the video…until your meter is restored to its correct operation range. Here’s the video:

This is a fictitious letter, listing everything we’d love to see in a perfect water ionizer. We’d love it if a water ionizer would live up to all of our expectations! We do have some water ionizers which come very close though. Read on to see which and why. 

Dear Water Ionizer Manufacturer:

I am interested in becoming an exclusive USA distributor for a perfect water ionizer. When I say perfect, I mean perfect in every way. Here are my specifications:

A Wish-List for a Perfect Water Ionizer:

We, we will be very meticulous in choosing the right water ionizer to represent. We insist that this water ionizer has the following:

• is manufactured with UL, ISO and CE standards and we will want proof that your water ionizers are built to the standards we have agreed upon [which the ISO, CE and UL certificates will help to do]. We will visit the factory regularly to make sure the standards are met perfectly.
• the electrodes are platinum coated titanium plates in which the plates are coated AFTER all cutting is done and the coating is applied and baked to the standards of a sufficient thickness to last a lifetime.
• the filters must be able to filter out fluoride, chlorine, chloramine, arsenic, lead, and all other common contaminants and be certified as safe filters. We will want certified independent laboratory proof that the filters do this — we will not just take your word for it. We will want to offer a lifetime warranty on these water ionizers and will want assurances that the water ionizer we choose will perform well for this time period. I
• the water ionizer we choose will have to test well [with a comparible or better pH and ORP to the other water ionizers we sell]. So whether the design has mesh or solid plates or whatever the number and size of plates it has — we insist it tests the best.
• we insist on is that the water ionizer we choose has an automatic self-cleaning of the electrode plates without stopping the water-flow production [in other words a system similar to the Jupiter models' DARC system].
• the water ionizer we choose will have to look nice in the kitchen and be a reasonable size [similar to the other water ionizers we sell].
• this water ionizer will have to have the capability to regulate water flow and turn water on/off via a dial or knob on the water ionizer itself, so that it can be hooked up to the main water line.
• we’d like to be able to produce 30 gallons [@9.5 pH with a -400 or better ORP] per day of ionized water with this water ionizer
• it must come with stainless steel diverters that can hook up to a faucet [and have adapters so that the most common faucets are easily adapted to fit the provided adapters. In addition it must have included a fitting that will allow the direct water-pipe connection giving the customer all he/she needs to choose either option for water supply connection.
• it must come with 1/4 inch food-grade water input hose at least 4' in length to accommodate the easy installation for the customer and we prefer a 1/2 inch grey rubber acid water drain hose, because it rests better on the sink.
• we would like a suction-cup attachment to the bottom of the acid water hose which keeps the acid water hose out of the way of the dishwater in the sink.
• this water ionizer must be easy to use and come with an easy to read manual and installation DVD, so there are no questions or confusions about how to set up and operate the water ionizer.
• the warranty card and other contact information also must be to our specifications and included in the kit.
• this perfect water ionizer needs to be packed in a box that has Styrofoam fitted to the form of the water ionizer and all of its parts, so as to ensure it will withstand the potentially rough handling of shipping. Also, it should include a pH testing kit.
• the water ionizer should also include pH & ORP meters which show the actual pH and ORP of the water output. In addition whatever instructions to keep the meters clean and stored properly should be included too. [This option can come separately at an extra price for those who want it]
• we’d like a calcium insert basket, like the Jupiter water ionizers have, as part of the design of the water ionizer, because some customers living in soft-water areas have been able to use this instead of having to put a remineralizer & housing in their water ionizer input line.
• we’d like a saline port, like the Enagic has, so customers who want the strongest acid are able to get it.

We will want to sell these at a reasonable price. We want to try to keep the price down around $1500. We want the best though, so we’ll need an engineer working on this who has ingenious capabilities and who has a mind for economy, luxury and excellence all in one design.

We will look forward to your speedy response. In the meantime, we do have several practically perfect water ionizers now, so you should be aware we are very picky.

This was a ficticious letter, but we’d welcome a reply from a real manufacturer who could live up to our perfect expectations. Most water ionizer manufacturers wouldn’t and couldn’t live up to these standards. What I was asking for costs a lot of money to do!

First of all, the platinum alone is going for $1350.00 per ounce right now! I’m asking to have the plates at least double-coated with pure platinum!  Manufacturers who cut corners on this [by using platinum alloys] are sprouting up all over. It’s not safe to substitute platinum for a platinum alloy. The platinum alloy may be safe for many years, but will eventually break down and the alloying metals will potentially leach into your water as well as exposing the titanium to your water-flow. The main point I’m making here is…

You just can’t cut corners on the platinum!

Actually, I can afford to be picky in my water ionizer standards, because…

I already offer nearly all of the things on my Wish-List for a Perfect Water Ionizer !

All quality water ionizers use platinum coated titanium plates.

Is titanium needed in a water ionizer electrode? And Why?

Titanium is a very hard, heat-resistant, non-magnetic, durable metal and it’s also abundant on this planet. So, it’s the perfect choice for use in a water ionizer.

Is the use of titanium electrodes in a water ionizer safe?

Yes, titanium is non-soluble and stable in water. It will last for many years [20, 30 or more] without corroding. Its durability, strength, and non-toxicity make it the choice of material to doctors and medical scientists use for their implanted medical devices such as artificial joints and pacemakers. Also, because it’s so durable and non-magnetic it makes it the best choice of metal to construct a water ionizer electrode with. And, as a side-benefit, it’s cheap.

What if a little gets into the water you drink?

It won’t, because it’s stable and insoluble, also the titanium plates are completely coated with platinum, but even in the odd event it did get into the water, the human body doesn’t react to Titanium as a poison. The body can tolerate high doses before any toxicity would occur and it doesn’t accumulate. Plus, remember, if people have titanium placed in their bodies by doctors [artificial joints, pins, rods, pacemakers] I’d say that indicates a high level of safety has been determined for this material.

If it’s safe, then why is platinum needed to coat the electrodes?

Platinum is a catalyst, and is needed to speed up the electrolysis. With the water ionizers changing [electrolyzing] the water so drastically just by passing the water over the electrodes, the ionization process wouldn’t occur without a “speeder-upper”. That’s platinum. 

Side Note:

Why are Enagic Dealers Saying that other Water Ionizers have titanium plates which will corrode, leach into your water and poison you?

They are misinformed. Plus they may find it convenient to scare people into thinking they have the only water ionizer that meets safety standards. It obviously works as a sales technique. Look at how many Enagic reps are saying this. They have been sold on this idea. This simply is not true though. It’s a sales technique which I find very suspicious, and I will continue to look into and debunk all the Enagic scare tactics that are unfair and untrue.
